Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main entry point for most visitors to Oman. Collecting your rental car here — rather than taking a transfer to the city and renting later — saves time, gives you freedom from day one, and often works out cheaper. Here is exactly how the process works and what to expect on arrival.
Best time to book your airport rental
Book at least 48–72 hours in advance during October–March (peak season) and Eid holidays. Same-day availability is limited. Booking online with Go Ride locks your vehicle and rate before you land.
Where to Pick Up Your Rental Car at Muscat Airport
Muscat International Airport operates from a modern terminal opened in 2018. After clearing immigration and collecting your baggage, exit through the arrivals hall. Go Ride offers two pickup options:
Meet-and-greet: A Go Ride driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. You walk directly to the designated parking area where the vehicle is ready. This is the fastest option and avoids any navigation confusion after a long flight.
Self-collect: We park the vehicle in the airport car rental zone (Level P1, short-stay parking). You can proceed directly after immigration without waiting for a driver.
Documents to bring for airport pickup
Your original passport, a valid driving licence from your home country, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your licence is not in English or Arabic. A credit or debit card for the security deposit (typically 50–100 OMR, refunded on return).
Driving Out of Muscat Airport: First Roads
The airport sits roughly 32 km west of Muscat city centre. Leaving the airport, you join Airport Boulevard which connects to two main routes:
Sultan Qaboos Street (Route 1): The main coastal highway running east towards central Muscat, Muttrah Corniche, and Old Muscat. Well-signposted and the most straightforward route if your hotel is in the city centre or Ruwi area.
Muscat Expressway: A faster dual carriageway connecting to Seeb, Al Khuwair, and further east to Al Mouj and Shatti Al Qurum. Use this for hotels in the diplomatic area or northern coast.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both work reliably in Oman. Download offline maps for the Muscat governorate before landing in case of SIM card delays.
Which Car to Rent for Your Muscat Trip
Economy & Sedan
A compact or midsize sedan is ideal for Muscat city driving — easy to park, fuel-efficient, and comfortable on the highway. Models include the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Sunny, and Kia Pegas. From 12 OMR/day.
SUV & Crossover
If you have luggage for multiple people or plan day trips to Wadi Shab or the Hajar Mountains, a mid-size SUV gives more boot space and highway comfort. From 22 OMR/day.
4x4 SUV
If Jebel Akhdar, Wahiba Sands, or any wadi driving is on your itinerary, a 4x4 is mandatory — not optional. The Jebel Akhdar road requires high-clearance 4WD by law. From 35 OMR/day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an International Driving Permit? If your licence is in English, most rental companies in Oman accept it without an IDP. If your licence is in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, or another non-Latin script, an IDP is required. We recommend carrying one regardless as a precaution.
What is the minimum age to rent at Muscat Airport? 21 years old. Drivers aged 21–24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge depending on the vehicle category.
Can I pay cash for the security deposit? The security deposit must be paid by card (credit or debit). The rental itself can be paid by either cash or card.
