Muscat is a city that rewards the driver who goes beyond the hotel shuttle and the tourist taxi circuit. The Grand Mosque, the Corniche, Old Muscat - everyone goes to those. But 45 minutes from the city is a wadi with turquoise pools. An hour away is a mountain road that climbs to 2,000 metres. With a car, Muscat becomes a base for one of the most varied travel experiences in the Gulf.

Best time to visit Muscat

October to April is the optimal window for Muscat and northern Oman. Temperatures are 22-32°C and outdoor activities are comfortable. May and June see rising heat; July to September reach 40-45°C which makes outdoor sightseeing genuinely unpleasant. If you must visit in summer, keep your driving to early mornings and evenings.

Getting Your Car from Muscat Airport

Muscat International Airport (MCT) sits roughly 32 km from the city centre. We offer full airport meet-and-greet at the arrivals hall - our driver holds a sign with your name and walks you directly to the vehicle. If you prefer to self-drive from the airport, we will park the vehicle in the designated rental area and you can go straight to it after clearing immigration.

The airport is well-signposted and leaving it is straightforward. Take the Muscat Expressway for a faster, less congested route to the southern districts, or the Sultan Qaboos Street for the main hotels and city landmarks.

Muscat City: Key Destinations & Driving Strategy

Must-See

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

1.5-2 hours Large free parking

The most magnificent building in Oman. Women need a headscarf and full-length clothing, men need long trousers. Free entry before 11am (except Fridays). Arrive by 8:30am to beat the tour buses.

Historic

Old Muscat & Al Alam Palace

1-2 hours Limited street parking

The twin Portuguese forts (Al Mirani & Al Jalali) guard the palace. Park in the designated lots near the National Museum and walk the palace grounds. Note: Forts are not open to the public but are great for photos.

Vibrant

Muttrah Souq & Corniche

2-3 hours Paid multi-storey nearby

Incense smoke, silver jewellery, and frankincense. Go in the evening when the souq is busiest. Park in the multi-storey lot behind the fish market for the easiest access.

Driving Rules & Parking in Muscat

City Traffic Rules

  • Roundabouts: Give way to traffic already inside. In multi-lane roundabouts, stay in the inner lane for left turns.
  • Littering: Throwing anything out of a car window carries heavy fines.
  • Cleanliness: Driving an extremely dirty car is technically against the law and you may be stopped.

Parking in Muscat

  • SMS Parking: Most street parking in busy areas is paid via SMS (Oman number required) or the "MctParking" app.
  • Public Holidays: Parking is usually free on Fridays and official public holidays.
  • Malls: Parking is free at City Centre Muscat, Mall of Oman, and Muscat Grand Mall.

Essential Day Trips from Muscat

The real reason to have a car in Muscat is the day trips. Within a 90-minute radius of the city are some of Oman's most spectacular natural attractions.

Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole

2 hours east Any car

The perfect coastal day trip. Hike 45 mins into Wadi Shab for secret swimming pools. Stop at Bimmah Sinkhole on the way back. Start early (7am) to beat the heat and crowds.

Nizwa Fort & Jebel Akhdar

1.5 - 2.5 hours 4x4 Required for Mountain

Visit the historic Nizwa Fort and Friday goat market, then climb to Jebel Akhdar for cooler temperatures and rose terraces. Police checkpoint enforces 4x4 only for Jebel Akhdar.

Wadi Al Arbaeen

1.5 hours SE SUV Recommended

One of Oman's most pristine wadis. Requires driving through some unpaved sections and shallow water. A 4x4 or high-clearance SUV makes this much more comfortable.

Al Sifah & Jebel Sifah

1 hour SE Any car

A dramatic winding road over the mountains leads to a tranquil marina development and public beach. Great for a relaxed afternoon drive and seafood dinner.
